When not to use AI

Also called: is AI the right tool, fit for purpose

DEFINITION

The judgment that some tasks are a poor fit for AI — where a formula is exact, where being wrong is unacceptable, where the data can't leave, or where a person's attention is the point.

WHY IT MATTERS

The fastest way to lose trust in AI is to use it where it doesn't belong. Naming the no-go cases up front is what makes the yes cases credible, and often saves cost and risk at once.

COMMONLY CONFUSED WITH

Being anti-AI. Choosing not to use it for a specific task is a fitness decision, the same kind you'd make about any tool.
